Camping, often touted as a cheap vacation, seems to always require special gear. As its popularity grew in the early 20th century, so did the camping gear industry offering everything from tents to special clothing and cooking equipment. This 1973 cookbook, Camping Cookin’, printed and published by Baxter Lane Company of Amarillo, Texas included a long list of food and kitchen items that “may be transferred from the home kitchen to the trailer or camping conveyance, or they may all be brought fresh at the store.” Large and small retailers such as Cabela’s and REI continue to offer every possible piece of equipment for the 21st-century camper.
