Highgate Cemetery, London, England was opened in 1839, one of the “Magnificent Seven” rural or garden cemeteries built around London in the 19th century.
The Egyptian Avenue gate features Egypt Revival columns with lotus-bud capitals framed by obelisks. Inside are burial chambers with cast iron doors featuring inverted torches, a symbol of the end of life originating from ancient Rome.
