This scrapbook of newspaper clippings and cartoons belonged to Katherine Warford Wilson (1906 – 1991) of Kentucky. Katherine grew up in Estill County, Kentucky and moved to Garrard County, Kentucky when she married Fred Wilson. Dates on some of the items in the scrapbook indicated it was created in the 1920s.
This is interesting because of the scrapbook that we are working on in class and comparing the difference in images and visuals.
This visual would be a great asset when either discussing how newspapers have changed over time or Kentucky heritage. This can be discussed over how cartoons are no longer a thing in newspapers.
A fun lesson to do with students while learning about scrapbooks in the past would be having students create a scrapbook using clippings from newspapers, magazines, etc. Explain to them that they are creating scrapbooks this way, instead of using actual pictures, because this is how people used to create scrapbooks. Students would be engaged and learning at the same time.
