Native American Family, c. 1899

Family and household organization varied widely between tribes of Native Americans, but two generalizations can be made. First, economic success in Native American society was not based on private ownership of land as in households of European descent. Second, the roles of Native American men, women, and children often contrasted with the prescribed roles of men, women, and children in white families. Investigating Family, Food, and Housing Themes in Social Studies examines how the concept of family differs across time and cultures.
The photographs of Frank Rinehart (1861-1928) portrayed Native Americans with dignity. Many of the large collection of his photographs were taken at the Indian Congress in Omaha in 1898.

  1. I really like this image because you can use it when teaching about Native Americans. It shows how they dress, what a family looks like, and what older images look like!
