The Scottish longhouse had a central hearth, no chimney and two or three rooms that served as living, sleeping and storage areas. The byre (barn) was attached to the house at one end. In this photo, the living quarters for the family are at the left end of the white house, the barn for livestock is attached on the right. This house was built between 1790 and 1840 and modernized over time with the additional of fireplaces, chimneys and a metal roof. The house was occupied by a Scottish farm family until 1954. The stone building on the right is an additional barn for threshing grain.
