19th century scrapbooks were much more than the crafty hobby of the late 20th and 21st century.Professional men and women kept scrapbooks documenting their professional careers. French Tipton was a Richmond, Kentucky newspaper editor, judge, and journalist. In this page from one of his scrapbooks, he saved the program and a newspaper story about related to his role as the Secretary of Madison County Teachers’ Institute. Note that he also include an advertisement for his newspaper and printing business (lower left). This scrapbook was created from a recycled book – note the text of the original book can be seen on the right side of the page.
