Instructions and patterns for fancywork projects were available in books, magazines, and newspapers in the 19th century. Many techniques and projects we recognize today, but others are unknown such as “antimacassar.” An antimacassar was decorated fabric placed on the backs and arms of chairs to protect the fabric underneath. It was named for macassar oil commonly used in men’s hair.
