In this print, a woman is mourning by gravestone. Prints like these with space to personalize the tombstone with information of a deceased loved one were popular in 19th-century culture focused on memorializing and mourning the dead. This print was inscribed with “to the memory of Capt. John Williams, died April the 1, 1825.” Urns and weeping willows were popular symbols in images of mourning and on cemetery tombstones.
