Buy a new car for vacation, 1961

Newspaper advertisement promoting vacation spending, 1961. The text states “There is nothing more aggravating than ‘car trouble’ on a vacation trip. A bad-acting automobile can squander your precious time and completely spoil your fun. If you need a new car anyway, why not buy it NOW and enjoy all the fine touring months ahead?” Advertisements such as this promoted vacations and vacation spending, even if money had to be borrowed.

  1. I really like this photo and how it shows the history of a couple different things. Younger students may have never seen an old car like this, so it could show how cars have evolved over time. This would also be a good example for lessons in media literacy and advertising. It shows the types of methods the advertisers used and how it compares to our advertisements now.
