Home of Swedish Farm Laborer's Family, c. 1920

An entire family shared this one room that served as a bedroom, dining room, and kitchen. The hearth, for heat and for cooking, is located behind the white wall on the left hand side of this photograph. This is half of a cottage built for a family of farm laborer’s who worked on a large estate in Sweden around 1920. Another family lived in an identical room in the other half of the building.
This photo was taken at Skansen, an open air folk museum located in Stockholm, Sweden. The museum includes 150 historical farm dwellings and buildings from all periods of Sweden’s history.
